Known as the entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles is as diverse a place as they come. Boasting almost year round sunshine and picture perfect backdrops, there is a multitude of activities to do and sights to soak up. Around 25 million visitors travel to the city each year, keen to experience the legendary landmarks and neighbourhoods, as well as hunt for the many celebrities living there.
Located in Southern California, and dubbed the City of Angels, Los Angeles is probably best known for its connections with the movie industry. However, it is also a global leader in the fields of entertainment, fashion and culture, making it a must-see destination. And, from landmarks like Hollywood Boulevard, Chinatown and Grauman’s Chinese Theatre to the many beaches and parks scattered around, there is enough to keep you on your toes regardless of when you visit.
Divided into a series of areas, each displaying its own unique characteristic and style, the diversity on offer is staggering. Downtown LA, for instance, is great for exploring the city’s greener side since many of the parks, gardens and plazas are located there. Chinatown and Little Tokyo can also be found there and offer the visitor a real cultural feast.
If shopping is your weakness, then LA is the place for you. Immortalised in the film Pretty Woman, and cited as the US’s most renowned shopping district, Rodeo Drive, Beverley Hills is the place to be seen. Definitely somewhere to splash the cash, but equally as good for window shopping, it is home to a variety of high-end fashion boutiques like Armani and Valentino, as well as the Saks Fifth Avenue department store.
No trip to LA would be complete without a visit to Venice Beach. Brimming with a host of activities to do, including swimming, surfing and fishing it is perfect for those seeking some fun in the sun. The Ocean Front walk is also worth a visit, due to the many street performers, artists and musicians who gather there.
In addition to its packed cultural programme, Los Angeles gastronomic offers are also not to be sniffed at. Thanks to the city’s ethnic diversity, it is easy to indulge in a range of different styles of cuisine, including Persian, Indian and Korean food. And, in true LA style, it is always possible to experience new food trends such as molecular gastronomy or slow food – a movement designed to combat the rise of fast food!
The city’s range of accommodation options is also huge. There are a number of Los Angeles hotels to choose from, ranging from the low-cost to the luxury, ensuring that every budget is catered for. Popular destinations include Downtown, Hollywood and Santa Monica.
